Community-Led Frailty Prevention

Frailty Prevention Team, The University of Tokyo | Japan

An evidence-based model developed by faculty at the University of Tokyo that supports community-based, resident-led activities that screen community members for signs of frailty, promoting healthy/active longevity and well-being. The model promotes a sense of purpose, or ikigai, among older residents who serve as Frailty Prevention Supporters, and a network has been created among participating communities throughout Japan and Asia.

Local Libero for Regional Revitalization & Sustainability

NOLLUWA | South Korea

NOLLUWA is a community organization in a rural region of South Korea where more than 40% of the population is over 65. NOLLUWA's slogan is “The Libero of Local Communities”—like the playmaker role of a libero in soccer, they connect villages, residents, culture, tourism, education, and local resources to create greater social impact and stronger community collaboration, and to foster sustainability in an aging world.

Fukuoka Dementia-Friendly Design

Fukuoka City | Japan

To address the rise in residents living with dementia, Fukuoka City launched the Dementia-Friendly City Project. It drew up and implemented “Guidelines for Design that is Accessible to People with Dementia” at more than 100 facilities, including city subway stations, ward offices, and outdoor spaces. They also created a Dementia-Friendly Center to serve as a design showroom. People living with dementia play an active role at reception and other areas of the center, sharing their experiences.
